The Vaishesika Darshan focuses on the nature of the universe. For them, the entire
universe can be reduced to six or seven padarthas. According to them knowledge
and liberation were achievable by a complete understanding of the world of
experience. The world of experience is the material world which has the atom as its
undivided unit and the largest which can be seen as composite structures.
Soul is regarded as one substance. Consciousness is regarded as its accidental
property. Soul is one of the padarth which is unconscious and is regarded as a mere
substratum to receive consciousness. For Vaishesikas, an entity can be known by its
opposite entity. Self can be known when there is a non-self.
